Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)

What is an HSA? A Health Savings Account (HSA) is a special account owned by an individual and used to pay for current and future medical expenses.
Who is eligible for an HSA? Any individual covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) who is not covered by other health insurance, is not enrolled in Medicare and cannot be claimed as a dependent on some else's tax return.
What is a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP)? An HDHP is a health insurance plan with minimum deductibles and maximum annual out-of-pocket expenses that meet certain IRS guidelines.
What are the HDHP minimum deductible amounts for 2014? $1,250 for self-only coverage
$2,500 for family coverage
What are the HDHP maximum annual out-of-pocket limits for 2014? $6,350 for self-only coverage
$12,700 for family coverage
What are the maximum contribution amounts for 2014? $3,300 for self-only coverage ($4,300 for individuals age 55 and older)
$6,550 for family coverage ($7,550 for individuals age 55 and older)
What can I use my HSA to pay for? Distributions from your HSA are tax-free if they are taken for qualified medical expenses as outlined by the IRS.
How can I access my HSA funds? You can access your HSA funds by using your free debit card or checks.  View HSA terms and conditions.
Do I earn interest on my HSA? Yes!  An HSA earns interest on a tiered basis.  The higher your balance, the more interest you earn.  View current rates.
What is the minimum balance for an HSA? An HSA can be opened with as little as $50 and must maintain a minimum balance of $1,000 OR receive an automated credit into the account at least once per statement cycle to avoid maintenance fees.  Learn more.
